Our vision

The International Kurdish Union for Academia and Scholarships (ikuas e.V.) creates new spaces for education, language and international understanding - supported by a diverse community of committed individuals, academics and supporters.

Our vision is clear: we are founding the first private Kurdish-language university outside the Kurdish-speaking world - academically sound, politically independent and interculturally open.

Three strategic pillars are at the center of this:

Developing the Kurdish language - scientifically sound, ideology-free, future-oriented

We research, document and shape the Kurdish language in all its main dialects - scientifically sound and independent.
Through linguistic research, didactics and digitalization, we create a reliable basis for education, media and social participation. Our work is ideology-free and politically independent - it serves the linguistic, cultural and scientific development of the Kurdish language in an international context.

The Kurdish language is rich, diverse and historically evolved - but also under pressure: decades of political oppression, lack of standardization and limited institutional support have led to it being underrepresented in many areas of public life - especially in education.

This is where we come in: Our aim is not only to preserve the linguistic diversity of Kurdistan, but to actively develop it further. We want to scientifically record the central dialects (Kurmancî, Sorani, etc.), prepare them didactically and make them digitally accessible - as a living educational language for the present and the future.

We see language not only as a means of communication, but also as a key to identity, academic participation and international understanding. In close cooperation with academics, institutions and the Kurdish diaspora, we are creating a sustainable, open language project that combines research, practice and social engagement.

A university as an anchor - independent, cosmopolitan, academically free

With the IKHS.DE - International Kurdish University Germany (i.Gr.) - is the first private university with a Kurdish profile outside Kurdistan. It stands for academic freedom, intercultural openness and independence from political, ideological and religious interests. Teaching and research take place in Kurmancî, Sorani, German and English, among other languages - pluralistic, critical and open to the world.

Anchored in the German academic system, the university makes use of the freedoms of a democratic, constitutionally protected university framework. This enables an academic environment that is not restricted by state or party political influence - a decisive advantage for an institution that wants to work on Kurdish issues with academic rigor and free of ideology.

IKHS.DE will be more than just a place to study: it sees itself as a bridge between the Kurdish diaspora, the linguistic and cultural regions where Kurdish is spoken and the international university world. Study programs, research projects and exchange formats are intended to bring Kurdish perspectives into the global academic discourse and at the same time open up new approaches to Kurdish language, history and society for young Kurds and international students.

The university is therefore not only a place of learning, but also a space for exchange, self-empowerment and international understanding - on an equal academic footing, with a critical spirit and in an open society.

Enabling education - through an independent foundation with a social mission

In order to ensure fair and equal access to IKHS.DE in the long term, we are setting up a non-profit foundation based in Germany.

This foundation not only ensures the financial stability of the university, but also provides targeted support for students through scholarships, awards project funding and supports educational initiatives in civil society. It is transparent, politically independent and committed to the fundamental values of an open, democratic educational society.

Education should not be a privilege. Particularly in the context of a private university, it is our declared aim to break down social barriers and enable talented young people - regardless of their background or financial situation - to study to a high standard. The foundation creates the structural conditions for this: through a broad support program, through fundraising at home and abroad and through cooperation with committed partners from academia, civil society and business.

In the long term, the foundation will not only secure the operation of IKHS.DE, but also support the academic study of the Kurdish language and society worldwide - for example through research funds, publication funding or scholarships for international visiting students.

It is therefore a central instrument for the sustainability of the project - and an expression of our aspiration to shape Kurdish education from within civil society: independent, oriented towards the common good and sustainable.

Our values

We stand for openness, diversity and participation. Respect, transparency and academic freedom characterize our actions.

For us, education is a human right - regardless of origin, language or status. Our university should be a safe place where ideas can grow and people can develop.

Our future

We are not just building a university - we are building a movement.

IKHS.DE stands for a Kurdish educational landscape that networks, develops and becomes internationally visible. With strong partners, a vibrant community and a clear vision, we are shaping a future in which Kurdish language and science have a firm place - worldwide.
